Snow in Spring

It was a feeling of deja vu. April 24th dawned grey and cold as most of the days in Halifax. But, instead of improving to a cold and bright day, it started snowing! Though not the copious amounts of a month or so ago, but enough to bury the newly-sprouted hyacinths and tulips under a white blanket.
Well, it is Canada, it will be cold and it could snow any time. But what hurts one is the poor health system and high taxes, especially in Nova Scotia. I wish somebody would make it worthwhile to stay here. And I mean for hard-working, educated people. It is a walk for college drop-outs, refugees and those considered by society as not-so-well-to-do.

Did you know that you could leave an apple with a bag of potatoes and prevent them from sprouting? Well, who cares. If you have potatoes, then get some sabudana or Sago and some chillies and danyache kut or ground peanuts, mix them all together. BUT, don't forget to rinse and soak the sabudana for an hour or two before you mix all these together and of course the potatoes need to be boiled and mashed and the chillies too should be chopped fine, not boiled, silly.

Welll somehow you get the things together with some salt and teensy weensy sugar and then you need to roll out small balls of this sometimes sticky dough. The flatten the balls and deep fry them. Thus they are called Sabudana Wada. Something similar that you may get at Panshikar in Dadar. Make some chutney to go with it. Grind coriander and chilles with salt in a food processor. Or maybe grind peanuts, take them in a bowl, add chilli powder and yogurt or dahi as one would say with some kosher salt and mix it together. Great with the wadas.

I think I am getting the hang of it

Now that I have got the basics, it should be fun scribbling here the longings for amchi mati.
Its March 22nd and it is -10 C. with a windchill of -16 C. and I wonder how the janata in Mumbai must be sweating it out. Also, it would be the Hapus season there.
